TEASER TRAILER ANALYSIS: Buried

The film teaser trailer I analysed is called ‘Buried’- a new horror film in 2010 released on 1st October. Directed by Rodrigo Cortés and Starring Ryan Reynolds, Stephen Tobolowsky and Samantha Mathis this film is based on the genre Horror; the reason why I chose to analyse the teaser trailer.
Narrative
The common simple narrative structure of Tzvetan Todorov’s theory is seen only just slightly in the full viewing of the film ‘Buried’ teaser trailer. We are not shown much, but we are left to listen to what seems to be introduced as the protagonist who wakes up in a pitch black coffin deep under the surface of the ground. He calls the 911 emergency services and successfully gets through until the line is cut off by lack of signal at the most important moment. The main character Paul Conroy is in search for help as he has established he is in a box/ coffin. This part we can link to two stages of Toderov’s theory, either the disruption of the equilibrium or the recognition of the disrupted equilibrium, as we don’t know if the disruption is over or not. From what we can see through I cant relate the narrative to the Full Toderov structure, as we are only shown one scene.
Audience
I would say that the target audience for this film would be 15 to 40 both male and female. The certification of the film is 15 so the film should automatically not be targeted to any below the age group. I would also say that the target audience would equal proportion of male to female, from what I know women prefer re-com movies however they also have favourite actors; Ryan Reynolds is a young American male who has a large fan base, mostly of women participant, as they find him good looking, which brings their attention to the movie’s he features in. This film is shown to only people over the age of 15, as children may fear aspects of horror; jumping objects and edits, sound emphasis effects and unsuitable footage and language. By legislation standards it is enforced to age certificate the film and to make it clear at the start of the trailer/film, which on this exemplar does so.
Sound
The sound we are introduced to is the diagetic dialogue of the main character Paul. This sound is introduced through the use of a sound bridge technique from one edit to another, giving the effect of suggestion he is the main character. The other sound we hear is the emphasis of the edit, of which is non-diegetic. In the trailer we are listening in to what the main character is doing, and that is calling the emergency services 911 for help as he has nowhere to go. With no image to focus on the sound is really important, as it must alone grab the interest of the viewer, which I found it does as I found it intriguing as I was waiting for the next moving image.
The other non-diegetic sound is in the form of horror sound effects, this includes screeching, taunting sounds and minor chords that connotate the horror genre. The effect of all the non-diegetic sound effects worries the audience until the point when an unexpected shock hits with an over exaggerated effect.
The dialogue of the character acts as a voice over throughout the trailer, it explains what is happening within the film to help the audience get a feel for it so they can decide if they would like to go and see it. The dialogue works well with the image of the scene as it helps understand what the scene is about, but still creates a sense of mystery- not knowing what will happen.

MISE EN SCENE
The setting is unknown, however left to the audience’s own interpretation until the ending when we are shown short glimpses of the main characters from the faulty lighter(prop). The setting as we see it though is pitch black in darkness; black suggesting danger and death.
Lighting is black throughout the extract, which is a form of low key. The effect of it shows parallel connotations of what the main character is feeling, which builds a connection between the protagonist and the audience, which is a persuasive selling device.
Through aspects of media the film producers have created a teaser trailer that well and truly teases the audience, as hardly any information is given away and also lures the viewer’s interest. Utilizing technology to show the conventions of a Horror themed genre they have successfully ticket all the boxes of conventional characteristic to include, however haven’t challenged the conventions, which is safer but less unique to others of the same genre.
