TEASER TRAILER ANALYSIS: The Silent House

The first image we see is of the distribution company; ‘Tokio Films’. This minuet image/ logo appears to be white at first, but then shortly after red (blood effect) fills the text and logo in. In the first two seconds of the extract we can interpret the genre as horror, and through an aspect of Mise en scene (colour) there is a suggestion that in the movie advertised all good things of pure and innocence turns to aggression, gore and blood. The flickering logo is a technique to show disturbance, which we can relate to Toderov’s narrative structure; of there being a stage of disturbance of the equilibrium.

Shortly after we are introduced to a clip by a straight cut, where we follow a group of people (one woman and two men) we presume are at the ‘Silent House’ using a tracking shot. In conjunction with the camera movement an over the shoulder shot is used over the woman to show the men exploring the house. This shows much detail of the two men, however little amounts of the woman. Suggesting the woman has more to show in this movie, suggesting the character as the protagonist.

The next significant feature seen is the showing of some newspaper articles. The first one which we see is an article written in 1944, the next image is of a set of images of tortured bodies found in the house. This piece of information reveals danger, and that it still remains 66yrs later. Alongside with this is playing is non-diegetic police sirens and a policeman’s radio. Suggesting it was once a crime scene, which connotates danger. The camera in the newspaper section scrolls over pages and headings as if some is reading it left to right and is curious to know exactly what happened, and maybe it could be the group in the present day searching the house.

The format of general footage, text, footage, text etc is introduced at this stage. This directly approaches the audience and is a technique to briefly explain things that are of the obvious.

The camera uses a over the shoulder shot and a tracking movement to film just the woman on her own, without the others. The camera suggests something is following her, and without notice to the camera shows her naive character profile. This unaware character is to the audience the ‘damsel in distress’, which suggests danger will come into play.

The next stage in the teaser trailer is the women being chased. A camera takes shots of her progressively for a longish period of time, whilst with the company of a minor sounding circus ride. This intervenes with the camera shots as it suggests that the woman is on a rollercoaster ride and can’t get off. The stalking camera suggests she is being watched and played with in what seems the haunted house.

The non-diegetic sound effect of the clown/ fairground soundtrack and parallel timed edits work with each other to emphasize edits. This work force/ collaboration resemble the haunting figure in the house.

The woman has attempted to run away in the unknown spooky house. Down the stairs and still followed by the hand held filming technique. She approaches a door, which she opens slowly to find a young woman in the distance in that room stood still, wearing nothing over than her sleeping garment. The extract then finishes.

to be continued...
